A fan-led organisation that was formed to help improve the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have decided to put the brakes on an upcoming tifo display.
The decision comes just hours after Tottenham announced that they would be increasing season ticket prices by six per cent for the 2024/25 season.
Tottenham blamed “a significant increase in matchday costs outside of our control” as well as a “need to continue to operate on a sustainable basis” as the reasoning for the hefty price hike which has hit supporters’ pockets hard.
The most affordable adult season ticket at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will cost £856 under the new pricing, and the most expensive would cost an eye-watering £2,367.
A decision to also halt senior concessions has also angered many.
There will be no tifo for Manchester City fixture
THFC Flags have released a statement on X this evening in which they claim they have made the decision to shelve the tifo in the upcoming fixture against Manchester City, believing it would be wrong to try to generate donations from fans following the imposed future costs.
The statement read: “Following on from the decision to remove senior concession season tickets and increase all season tickets by 6% we’ve unfortunately made the decision to cancel our tifo for the Manchester City game. But we could not, in good conscience, continue to raise money for this display knowing the negative impact this negative ticketing policy will have on fans.
“Our group, relies on the loyalty of thousands of fans to spend their time designing, funding and helping to create these displays in the stadium. And today, we’ve seen the club exploit fan loyalty under the guise of ‘inflation’ despite being one of the richest clubs in the world.
“We’re told that financially we are in a strong position, yet the decision to become the first team to stop offering new senior concession st’s is an insult to fans who spend a lifetime following the team.
“The club acknowledges that the atmosphere in the stadium has been terrific this season and we’re delighted to have played a very small part in this alongside the likes of ROTS and SpursSongSheet. Over the last two years, we’ve all worked hard with the club to improve the atmosphere but this has been undermined by today’s decision which will price out many.
“Anyone who has donated can email us their order ID for a refund.”
Over £800 had been raised so far towards the creation of the tifo for the fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to date.
SpursWeb Opinion
It is a huge shame that the tifo will not go ahead, but it is understandable given today’s developments which have left such a sour taste in the mouths of supporters.
There has been a huge disconnect between the club in fans in recent years, which looked to have been improving this season – however, this is certainly a setback.
