Jermaine Jenas has explained how draconian Juande Ramos’ dietary restrictions were, revealing that the former Tottenham manager made the squad consume a ‘disgusting’ energy drink at half-time.
Ramos arrived at Tottenham after enjoying tremendous success at Sevilla and he made a fine start to his time in North London after replacing Martin Jol at the helm in 2007.
The Spaniard guided Spurs to a Carabao Cup just months after taking charge at White Hart Lane and the side were expected to push on and challenge the top four in his first full season after signing the likes of Luka Modric, Giovani Dos Santos, David Bentley, and Roman Pavlyuchenko in the summer of 2008.
However, instead, the side made a disastrous start to the 2008-09 season, earning just two points from their first eight league matches, which led to Ramos losing his job and making way for Harry Redknapp.
The disgusting Juande Ramos cocktail at Tottenham
Many former Tottenham players have already explained how strict Ramos’ dietary restrictions were, with all sauces and sugar said to have been banned from the training ground (talkSPORT).
Jenas has now shed more light on some of the practices of the former Tottenham boss and his fitness coaches.
The 41-year-old said on That Peter Crouch Podcast about Ramos: “This guy took everything! If it was pasta no sauces allowed. He even got rid of Lucozades at half-time. There was either water or this special mix.
“Honestly, this actually happened. This special mix was potatoes, rice, water and pasta, just blended with ice. He handed it out and it was like wallpaper paste so we have said it tastes vile and he’s saying it’s natural, it’s all good. Drink it.
“So he said next week I’ll do something for you and he put bourbon biscuits in to make it a chocolatey version of the same thing. It was disgusting.
“The fitness coach was doing it under the guidance of Juande. It was mad. Every single week there was this weird guy flown in from Spain. And you’d go into this room and stand on his scales and he’d grab all the bits of fat on you and he’d go okay leave.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is fair to say that Spanish and Italian football were ahead of the English game when it came to nutrition and sports science until 15 to 20 years ago.
However, as Ramos’ struggles proved, all the marginal gains that sides can get out of those improvements mean nothing if it leads to low morale among the squad.
