Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United this summer, but he insists he is paying no mind to any of those “rumours” and wants to stay where he is for now.
It’s well known that Tottenham are looking for an upgrade or two in midfield this summer. In particular, the Lilywhites are keen to add strength in the defensive midfield role.
A number of names have been linked with Spurs, but one player who could prove to be the solution to their needs is Morten Hjulmand.
According to Record (as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham are battling Manchester United for the Danish midfielder.
Hjulmand has four goals and four assists for Sporting in 48 appearances this season (Transfermarkt), and has been a key figure for the Portuguese giants.
Hjulmand playing it patient for Premier League move
However, Ange Postecoglou may have to look elsewhere this summer, as Hjulmand himself has claimed he is not interested in speculation and is committed to his current project.
On the rumours, he told Record (via Sport Witness): “I haven’t thought about it. There are rumours all the time about different players, coaches and clubs. It’s normal. It’s not something a player should waste energy or time on. We need to have our minds focused elsewhere: here, on our day-to-day lives, when we have so many games to play.”
Hjulmand only signed for Sporting last summer, and it seems he’s not ready to go just yet. “I can say that this time at Sporting has been incredible. I really enjoy coming to train every day, I like living in Portugal and I still have a long-term contract with Sporting. Of course, I want to stay at the club.
“Maybe one day it will be the right time to go to the Premier League… But I’m very happy where I am now and with my life at Sporting.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Hjulmand is a very solid player and fits the profile we are looking for, but I would be very surprised if he was to move on from Sporting already this summer. I think we will have to assess other options and go back for Hjulmand next year.
