Alan Hutton believes that Tottenham Hotspur will have no choice but to accept a massive financial hit on Tanguy Ndombele as the time has now come for the club to give up on the Frenchman.
It is now five years since Spurs spent a club-record £63m to sign Ndombele from Lyon and one can make a persuasive case that the decision has proven to be the worst transfer move in the North London club’s history.
While the 27-year-old had at least shown glimpses of his quality last season on loan at Napoli, he has failed to have any sort of impact at Galatasaray, having had to watch on from the bench for much of the campaign.
Over the last few weeks, various outlets have claimed that the Istanbul club will not take up the €15m (£12.8m) option to buy the former Lyon man this summer and that the player will return to Spurs at the end of his loan spell (Sporx).
Should Spurs terminate Tanguy Ndombele’s contract?
Hutton has now said that Ndombele has simply not shown the desire to turn his career around, leaving Tottenham with no choice but to accept a huge loss.
When asked about the midfielder, the former Spurs right-back told Tottenham News: “I forgot about him, that’s the honest truth. He’s a guy that they paid huge money for, probably gave him a huge contract and he’s pretty much done nothing. I don’t know if it’s something within him that he’s not willing to fight or give his all.
“I don’t think he looked like he wanted to work hard in a Tottenham shirt, he looked like he wanted to be all flair and wasn’t bothered with anything else.
“They’re going to have to chalk that one up to a huge loss in my opinion. I don’t see many suitors out there for him and I don’t watch many of their games so I don’t know exactly how he’s been performing over there but every time I have seen him he hasn’t hit the heights they thought he would.”

The Ndombele transfer serves as a prime example of how important it is for clubs to do sufficient research on a player’s personality and attitude before greenlighting his signing.
One can have all the talent in the world but if he does not have the desire to maximise it, it is impossible to succeed at the top level.
