Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal both have pretty sturdy number-one goalkeepers right now, but it seems the North London rivals will go head-to-head to sign another this summer.
Goalkeeper could swap Spain for London
Spurs hit the jackpot when they signed Guglielmo Vicario last summer, with the Italian firmly establishing himself as the club’s top stopper and one of the best in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Arsenal brought in David Raya from Brentford, and between him and Aaron Ramsdale, the Gunners are stacked for keepers.
But, both clubs are now looking for more, with a report from Sport (via Sport Witness) claiming the Lilywhites and their rivals are keen on signing Espanyol goalkeeper, Joan Garcia.
It is thought Garcia’s performances at the end of last season were enough to “awaken interest” from both the English sides, while Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation.
But, while Madrid would need Andriy Lunin to leave before they move for another goalkeeper, both Spurs and Arsenal would be ready to sign Garcia now.
The 23-year-old reportedly has a release clause of €25m (£21.06m) that expires in 2028. It is believed Espanyol will only let him leave if that clause is triggered.
Is the deal worthwhile?
Whether Spurs or Arsenal would be willing to pay that much for what is expected to be a backup option remains to be seen.
Spurs currently have Fraser Forster recovering from injury, and just tied down Brandon Austin to a new contract. Alfie Whiteman is also in the squad but is low down the pecking order.
Spurs Web Opinion
I just don’t see a new goalkeeper being a priority for us at all this summer. Vicario is going to play pretty much every game, while Forster and Austin can share the cup games if needs be. Next summer, I would be more inclined to sign a solid backup.
