Postecoglou makes confident prediction about ‘outstanding’ Spurs midfielder
Ange Postecoglou is delighted with the performances of James Maddison this season and has made a confident prediction about the attacking midfielder.
Fighting adversity
Maddison had to deal with the heartbreak of being left out of the England squad for the Euros in the summer, with the 27-year-old confessing that he was devastated not to make the final cut.
However, the Tottenham man admitted that his form during the latter part of last season was not up to the required standard.
The former Leicester City star has responded brilliantly to that setback, having been one of Spurs’ best players at the start of the new campaign.
Postecoglou is sure Maddison will be considered
The Tottenham man certainly made it difficult for Lee Carsley to leave him out of the squad for the upcoming Nations League clashes against Greece and Finland. Unfortunately, the England manager has done exactly that (Ornstein).
Postecoglou has now hailed Maddison’s displays, insisting that he is sure that the Tottenham man will be a strong contender to make it back into the Three Lions set-up eventually.
When asked what he has made of the midfielder’s performances this season, the Spurs head coach told Football.London: “I think Madders has been outstanding so far this year. His form from the first game has been really strong physically. I’ve said a few times that he’s back at the levels where he can play in the manner he wants to and do everything he wants in a game.
“In the last two or three weeks, he’s had an effect on goals and assists as well, which always gets highlighted with players in his position, but his general play has been outstanding. I’m sure if he continues in that vein he will be in the conversation for England squads moving forward.”
Competition for places
The problem Maddison has is that the competition for places for attacking midfield spots in the England set-up is quite intense at the moment, with the likes of Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze and Jude Bellingham jostling for positions.
While it might be difficult for Maddison to force himself into the starting lineup, one would certainly have expected the Spurs star to make the squad this time around. This will likely keep him very hungry to make the November squad though.
