Archie Gray’s Europa League-leading stat shows he is growing at Tottenham
Archie Gray is going from strength to strength with each Tottenham appearance, and he is now sitting at the top of a key metric across the entirety of the Europa League this season.
Archie Gray has been Tottenham’s utility man
Gray has started every single Europa League game for Spurs this season and has played in all positions across the backline so far.
The 18-year-old has shown a tactical maturity that one very rarely finds with players so young and even though he has not broken into Tottenham’s first-choice starting eleven yet, the £40m that the club spent on him seems like an astute investment.
Archie Gray sitting at the top of the charts in key metric
The teenager is not just impressing in the eye test, but his numbers are also suggesting that he has been up there with the best players in the Europa League so far this season.
In fact, WhoScored reveal that no one across the entire competition has won possession more times in the defensive third than the Tottenham man has.
Gray‘s ability to win duals and steal the ball suggests that the youngster will do a fine job when he is eventually moved into midfield, which many think is his best position.
Gray will have to wait for a midfield opportunity
With Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur both suspended, Gray normally would have had an opportunity to play as a number six against Southampton. However, given the injuries that Spurs have in central defence, the Englishman had to slot into the backline once again.
The silver lining is that Gray has looked extremely assured and accomplished in the centre of defence too. Is there a position he can’t play?! Centre-back, right-back, left-back, central midfield – Ange Postecoglou must love having players like that in his squad.
