Lucas Bergvall now shining after a difficult start

A lot of Spurs fans expected Bergvall to hit the ground running after what they saw from the 18-year-old in pre-season.

That did not quite materialise, with the teenager struggling to have the expected impact over the first few months, but he is now starting to find his feet at Spurs and is getting better with each outing.

With Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur suspended for the clash against Southampton, the Swede was handed his first Premier League start at St Mary’s and he passed the test with flying colours.

Bergvall reflects on fulfiulling a dream

Understandably, the midfielder was over the moon with the way things went for him on Sunday, with the youngster delivering a composed display as the away side emerged 5-0 winners.

The former Djurgardens man admitted that things have not been easy in his first six months at Spurs but insisted that he is getting better every day.

Speaking after the game, Bergvall told Spurs Play: “It felt really good. It has been a dream since I was a young kid to start in the Premier League, so I’m really grateful for that. The team helped me and Djed [Spence] today, our first start and I think we all did amazing.”

“It’s a big difference for me, coming from the Swedish league. It’s a big difference when you are 18 years old. I am learning every day.”

On his new position, he also added: “I like to play as a 6 in this type of system.”

The Sweden international certainly did not look out of place at this level, combining brilliantly with the likes of James Maddison and captain Heung-min Son.

The youngster confessed that he is thoroughly enjoying playing alongside the kind of star names he is in North London.

When asked about his goals for the rest of the season, Bergvall responded: “Trying to train to get better, to get better confidence and get better physically. Learning from the best. You saw Sonny, Madders, Deki today. Unbelievable players.”
