Tottenham edge closer to Carabao Cup glory

Tottenham Hotspur have found themselves in an exhilarating run of form, securing back-to-back victories for the first time since November.

Their quarter-final clash against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup provided a spectacle filled with goals, drama, and moments of uncertainty that left fans on the edge of their seats.

Despite emerging victorious, the North London club must confront the troubling patterns that nearly cost them their place in the semi-finals.

The evening began with optimism as Tottenham took control early on. Dominic Solanke struck first, putting his team ahead within 15 minutes, and the momentum continued into the second half when Dejan Kulusevski doubled the lead just two minutes after the restart.

Solanke’s second goal of the night seemed to seal the deal for Ange Postecoglou’s side, but football, as it so often does, had other ideas.

Manchester United capitalised on defensive lapses with Fraser Forster’s errors allowing goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo in quick succession.

Even when Heung-min Son restored a two-goal cushion late in the game, the nerves persisted as United pulled one back in injury time, leaving Spurs to hang on for a tense 4-3 victory.

Dominic Solanke’s verdict: “We made it hard for ourselves”

Reflecting on the match, Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke offered a candid assessment of the team’s performance, speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle.

While pleased with the outcome, Solanke acknowledged the precarious nature of the second half and the need for the team to learn from their mistakes.

He said: “Being 3-0 up we could have dealt with the game better, killed some time but we made it hard for ourselves, but the important thing is we won and we’re through.

“That’s football sometimes, we stick together. Mistakes are a part of football, we dug in, we showed spirit and got the job done.

“Scoring against a team like United is great but the most important thing is to win today and getting to the semi-final.”

Defensive frailties remain a concern for Spurs

While Tottenham’s attacking prowess was evident in their thrilling victory, the defensive lapses that nearly cost them the game remain a recurring issue for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Dominic Solanke’s comments resonate with many fans and analysts who have observed Spurs’ inability to close out games effectively this season.

The match against Manchester United was not an isolated incident; Tottenham have repeatedly struggled to maintain composure and solidity in defence during crucial moments.

While they managed to advance to the semi-finals this time, such vulnerabilities could prove costly in the latter stages of the competition.

Addressing these issues will be critical if they are to end their silverware drought and fulfil their ambitions this season.
