Tottenham make approach for Postecoglou’s top centre-back target
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of one former Premier League centre-back, who is thought to be at the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wishlist for January.
Tottenham prioritising strengthening at the back
Ange Postecoglou has had to deal with an injury crisis in defence, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies all out of action at the moment.
As a result, the Australian has had to play Archie Gray as a makeshift centre-back alongside Radu Dragusin over recent weeks, with the move producing mixed results.
Unsurprisingly, the Lilywhites are thought to be prioritising strengthening at the back during the January transfer window and they have now reportedly identified their top target.
Spurs make an approach for former Everton man
This update comes from Football Insider, who claim that the North London club have now made an approach to sign Ben Godfrey from Atalanta.
The report reveals that Postecoglou values the Englishman’s versatility, with his ability to play across the backline making him the Australian’s number-one target.
It is explained that Tottenham are only exploring a short-term deal for the former Everton man, with the Premier League side alleged to have contacted Atalanta about a transfer.
Would Atalanta be open to doing a deal?
Ben Godfrey only made a £10m switch from Merseyside to Atalanta back in the summer and he has since struggled for game time, having made just five appearances for the Italian side.
There is now said to be a ‘growing belief’ that a return to England is on the cards for the 26-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.
The outlet reveals that Wolves and Nottingham Forest are also on the centre-back’s trail, but it is Tottenham who have now reportedly emerged as frontrunners.
