Tottenham were linked with Ben Godfrey transfer

It has been widely reported over recent weeks that Tottenham are expected to reinforce their backline in January, given the injuries that they are dealing with in their defence.

Just a couple of days ago, it emerged that Spurs had started talks with Atalanta over a loan deal for former Everton defender Ben Godfrey, who has struggled for game time since making the move from Merseyside to Bergamo back in the summer.

The update explained that Godfrey’s ability to play across the back four appeals to Postecoglou and suggested that Tottenham were in pole position to land the centre-back.

Ange Postecoglou addresses Ben Godfrey rumours and admits big January challenge

As usual, Postecoglou refused to give anything away when asked specifically about the 26-year-old defender.

When quizzed on a potential move for Godfrey, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “We are starting naming players are we? Let’s wait until after Christmas for that. We’ll just see, mate. I’m kind of hoping I’ve been really good this year because I’ve got a fair Christmas list for Santa so I will see what I get.”

Postecoglou confessed that signing the right players has become ever harder this January as clubs are reluctant to lose any of their important players, with qualification for the Champions League and Europa League still at stake for many of them.

When asked how difficult it would be for Spurs to find the right players to improve their team and their overall squad, he responded: “I think there’s two different questions. I think improving the team may be a bit challenging, but improving the depth of our squad, I think there’s always possibilities out there,” revealed the former Celtic boss.

“I think it’s a bit more challenging this January because of the way European football is set up. Because sometimes in January you would find maybe a couple of clubs out of Champions League contention that were thinking, well, you know what, we’re not in the Champions League, so maybe just release a couple from our roster.

“So that doesn’t exist now because all European competitions are kind of still in the balance. So that probably adds another layer of difficulty to it. But we’ll endeavour because I think there’s definitely a need for us to reinforce. We’ll just see how successful we are in that.”

Postecoglou is hinting at signing squad players

Reading between the lines of Ange’s answer, it sounds like he does not expect any big-money signings to arrive in January and improve his starting eleven.

Instead, Spurs appear to be on the lookout for additional cover in different areas of the pitch so that they are better equipped to cope with an injury pile-up.
