Ange Postecoglou on playing Yves Bissouma at centre-back for Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou offers a rather curious answer when asked if Yves Bissouma could start as a centre-back on Sunday in light of Tottenham’s injury issues in defence.
Additional injury blows have further complicated Spurs’ defensive woes
Tottenham were already without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and the pair have now been joined on the treatment table by Radu Dragusin, who picked up an ankle injury during Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
To make matters worse, Ben Davies, who had returned to training earlier this week, has now suffered a set-back, with the Welshman expected to be out of action for a couple of more weeks.
This has left Postecoglou scratching his head on who he will start alongside Archie Gray in the heart of Tottenham’s defence on Sunday.
Can Yves Bissouma play as a centre-back?
Bissouma was the man who came on for Dragusin in the dying stages of Tottenham’s clash at the City Ground after the Romanian was forced off.
However, Postecoglou admits that he is not sure if the Mali international can play as a centre-back for a whole game.
When asked if the former Brighton man will start alongside Gray, the Tottenham boss told Football.London: “Don’t know… Yves never played there. Had to put him there but we’ll see.”
What other options does Postecoglou have?
Based on Ange’s answer, it sounds like he still has not made up his mind on who will play at centre-back against Wolves.
The Australian is likely to start one of Bissouma or Bentancur. He cannot play Destiny Udogie there as Djed Spence‘s red card means that the Italian will be required to play left-back.
The other option is to hand a start to an academy youngster like Malachi Hardy or Alfie Dorrington, which would be a bold call.
