Newcastle look to steal march on Tottenham in race for centre-back
Newcastle United are ready to step up their interest in a Tottenham Hotspur target and hope to leapfrog Spurs in the race to land the youngster.
Tottenham and Newcastle eyeing Abdukodir Khusanov
Tottenham’s injury issues at the back have been well documented and it has been widely reported over recent weeks that the club are expected to reinforce their backline in January.
The latest to make this claim was The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, who stated a couple of days ago that Lens starlet Abdukodir Khusanov was one of the centre-backs at the top of the club’s wishlist.
However, Kilpatrick warned that Tottenham would have to battle Newcastle United for the 20-year-old, with the Magpies also showing serious interest.
Newcastle want to leapfrog Tottenham in Abdukodir Khusanov race
An update has emerged on iNews about Newcastle’s pursuit of Khusanov, with the report stating that the club are now determined to ‘steal a march’ on Spurs in the race for the centre-back.
It is revealed that the young defender is rated highly by the decision-makers at St James’ Park and fits the profile of players that the club want to bring through the door.
The outlet claims that Lens are ready to cash in on Khusanov and have already instructed super-agent Jorge Mendes to drum up interest in the player.
It is asserted that an offer of around £20m would be enough to sign the Uzbekistan international in January.
Khusanov’s stance revealed
According to iNews, the central defender is ready to leave Lens and would be willing to embark on a Premier League adventure. In fact, it is asserted that Khusanov has signalled that he is interested in completing a move to St James’ Park.
The publication adds that apart from Spurs, the likes of RB Leipzig and Man City are also circling over the Lens man, but Newcastle are said to be hopeful of winning the race due to the connections that their sporting director, Paul Mitchell, has in France.
