Heung-min Son missed penalty because Jose Sa received secret instructions
Heung-min-Son had his first-half penalty saved by José Sá in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers and a video has shown one player telling the goalkeeper where to dive.
Another frustrating day for Tottenham
Tottenham had a chance to take three points against relegation-scrappers, Wolves, but things once again did not go according to plan.
Although Spurs entered the break with the lead, recovering from going behind early on, the away side scored a late goal as the Lilywhites recorded a fifth consecutive Premier League home game without a win.
While some have called for the end of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, many have acknowledged he tried to play with more balance when Spurs were ahead, yet it still failed. This has caused questions to be asked of the players who were unable to see out a victory.
Spurs missed three big chances during the match and despite decent overall performances, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke wasted opportunities, but perhaps the most disappointing display of the afternoon was that of club captain Heung-min-Son.
Hwang ensured Heung-min-Son missed Tottenham’s penalty
Scoring lower than any of his teammates in our match ratings, Son struggled on Sunday. Not only did he fail to play a single accurate cross, but his only shot on target was when he had a penalty saved after Brennan Johnson won a foul in the 18-yard box.
But evidence suggests the penalty was not kept out because it was poorly struck, but due to one Wolves player’s inside knowledge of Son’s game.
A video captured by X user @mari_mavi5 has emerged which shows Wolves forward, Hee-chan Hwang, pointing to his goalkeeper’s left, clearly instructing where Son was going to hit his penalty, before his arm was forcibly lowered by Radu Dragusin.
Hwang, who is Son’s teammate in the South Korean national team, ended up being correct. His instruction was heeded by José Sá, who dived in the direction he was told and made the save to keep the score level at 1-1. It was the first penalty kick Son has failed to score in almost five years.
Heung-min-Son has been underwhelming for Spurs
Looking at Son’s statistics without any context, things do not seem so bad. He has created 12 goal-scoring chances in the league and has six assists. However, many of his performances have not reached the standards expected of him, leading to questions about whether he has a long-term future at the club.
With Spurs eleventh in the Premier League table, they need their big players to step up, especially their captain, but can someone who is having to be substituted not long after 60 minutes for another poor showing really be relied on to drive them forward?
