Tottenham set to battle Newcastle and Man United for England midfielder
An England midfielder, who is near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist, is expected to seal a return to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Ligue 1 star is now a wanted man in the PL
Angel Gomes is understandably attracting interest from the Premier League on the back of his rise over the last 18 months.
The Lille star has been one of the most consistent midfielders in Ligue 1 of late and has been a regular in the England squads since the Euros.
The 24-year-old’s current deal at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy runs out next summer and it has been widely reported over the last few months that Tottenham are one of the clubs plotting to bring the midfielder back to these shores.
A three-way battle taking shape for Angel Gomes
According to the print edition of The Sunday Mirror (Page 67), Manchester United are now plotting to bring Gomes back to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
The midfielder came through the ranks at United and it is asserted that he would be willing to re-join the club at the end of the season, with Rubem Amorim’s men expected to push ahead with a move.
The outlet names Spurs and Newcastle as clubs who are also watching the Gomes‘ situation, thus potentially setting the stage for a three-way battle.
The publication suggests that Lille are resigned to losing their star man on a free transfer next summer.
Could Tottenham tempt Lille with a cheeky January bid?
If Gomes has made it clear to Lille that he would not be signing a new deal, the Ligue 1 club might be tempted to sell him in January rather than lose him on a free next summer.
Perhaps Spurs and the other suitors could be contemplating a cheeky £6m-£10m offer for the England international in January to see if the French club will bite.
