Insider predicts Spurs could make player-plus-cash offer for 24-year-old
Former Tottenham scout Bryan King believes that the North London club could consider offering one of their academy players in a player plus cash to sign a 24-year-old transfer target.
Will Spurs add a goalkeeper to their squad this month?
Tottenham face a big dilemma over whether to make a move for a goalkeeper during the current transfer window, particularly given that there are plenty of other areas that they need to address.
It was explained by Alasdair Gold earlier this week that the Lilywhites are considering whether to bring in a temporary stopgap or to potentially sign a long-term option who can take over as Guglielmo Vicario‘s understudy when Fraser Forster leaves in the summer.
This was also backed up by The Times, who revealed a couple of days ago that Spurs are keeping tabs on three goalkeepers: Burnley’s James Trafford, Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, and Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro.
Bryan King suggests a solution for Spurs
King believes that Patterson is one player who will suit the North London club’s requirements, but he remarked that getting the 24-year-old out of Sunderland would be a big challenge for the Premier League side.
The former Spurs scout suggested that Postecoglou‘s men could make a player plus cash offer which would see goalkeeper Brandon Austin go to the Stadium of Light.
King told Tottenham News: “Tottenham definitely need to sign another goalkeeper. However, signing Patterson in January might be difficult. Austin doesn’t seem close to getting an opportunity at Tottenham. Therefore, perhaps Spurs could offer Austin plus cash to sign Patterson.
“At present, Austin is Spurs’ number two, and it would make sense for Spurs’ number two to be offered in a deal for Sunderland’s number one. That is a deal which could happen. However, would Sunderland, who are pushing for promotion, want to get rid of one of their main assets?
“Money would need to be included, and I don’t think it would be small money, because at present Sunderland don’t need to sell, but Spurs do need to sign a goalkeeper because if anything happens to Fraser Forster, they could be in trouble.”
Spurs likely to put off goalkeeper pursuit until summer
Under normal circumstances, one would expect Tottenham to sign another shot-stopper in January rather than run the risk of continuing with Forster as the sole option for the next month or two.
However, these are not normal circumstances, with Spurs having their work cut out in January. The Lilywhites will be prioritising additions in central defence, midfield and in attack.
They could thus decide to put off addressing the goalkeeping position until the summer transfer window, especially given that no club is going to be keen on letting their number one leave midway into the season.
