Darren Bent tells Spurs what to do with Postecoglou – ‘I liken it to Arsenal’
Darren Bent claims that Spurs simply cannot afford to make one mistake regarding Ange Postecoglou on the back of their struggles this season.
Is it business as usual at Spurs for Postecoglou?
All the noises coming out of Spurs indicate that it is very much business as usual at Hotspur Way and that the club are not thinking about sacking Postecoglou right now.
However, there is no doubt that the Tottenham top brass will be worried about the team’s inability to emerge from their slump, and they would not be doing their jobs if they had not already considered contingency plans should things continue to go south.
The big question is how much more leeway will Postecoglou get and we might be about to learn the answer to that question over the coming weeks.
Darren Bent asks Spurs to follow Arsenal’s example
Bent believes that after the failed managerial hires Tottenham have had over the last five years, they simply cannot afford to sack Postecoglou and start from scratch again.
The former Spurs striker pointed to how Arsenal stuck with Mikel Arteta during his early struggles and suggested that the Lilywhites need to do the same with the Australian.
The pundit remarked on Ben Foster- The Cycling Goalkeeper’s YouTube channel: “Do you start again? Remember, they’d had Jose [Mourinho], who’s been one of the best, they’ve had [Antonio] Conte, who’s been one of the best, they’d have Nuno [Espirito Santo], [Mauricio] Pochettino obviously, people still talk about those years.
“They’ve now got Ange [Postecoglou], they can’t now start again. I liken it to Arsenal, I know, obviously, the rivalry. Arteta comes in, I know he obviously got the success with the FA Cup, if you look at their league form, he went eighth to eighth and they still stuck with him even though the fans turned a little bit.”
Man United struggles are a cautionary tale for Spurs
Manchester United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim should serve as a cautionary tale to Tottenham on what happens when you allow one manager to build a squad according to his style and replace him with a manager who has a completely different philosophy.
Spurs have no choice but to ride this storm through and see if Postecoglou can turn this around once he has his key players back.
Daniel Levy and co should then take a final call at the end of the season on whether the 59-year-old is the right man to take the club forward.
