Chris Sutton predicts Tottenham v Newcastle – ‘This is going to be a great game’
Chris Sutton has made his prediction as Tottenham Hotspur host Newcastle United in the early Premier League kick-off and he thinks Spurs will continue a pattern many of their results this season have followed.
Tottenham have lost a number of matches by one-goal margins
Tottenham have not done well at sealing points this season, as they sit 11th in the Premier League table. But much has been said about their goal difference of +13, which is the fourth-best in the Premier League.
Before facing Liverpool in the latter stages of December, Tottenham’s eight losses in all competitions had been by a single goal and their recent defeat at Nottingham Forest was also by one score.
With Newcastle United in fine form, a win for Spurs will not be expected by the masses and if this is the case, their recent history indicates this could be another game of fine margins.
Chris Sutton predicts Tottenham vs Newcastle score
Chris Sutton has predicted the weekend’s matches on BBC Sport and he reckons Tottenham are about to record a defeat by just one goal for the tenth time this campaign.
Although he expects Tottenham to score during the match, he cannot see anything but a victory for the away side, whose superb form has left them three points away from the top four.
He said: “Newcastle’s form is incredible, with five wins on the spin in all competitions. They have scored 16 goals in those games, with only one conceded.
“Tottenham, in contrast, are on a poor run of results – although they did not perform badly in their defeat by Nottingham Forest or in their draw with Wolves last time out.
“This is going to be a great game and, while I think Spurs will score, I just can’t go against Newcastle at the moment.
Eddie Howe’s side have got goals in them and it is not just Alexander Isak who is a threat – Jacob Murphy is playing really well and their midfield of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton looks very strong.”
Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle
Tottenham’s results have not always reflected their performances
Sutton has mentioned Spurs did not perform badly against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers. They had more shots in the former game, as well as shots on target and against Wolves they had 2.25 expected goals and missed three big chances.
Tottenham’s defence is never going to be perfect with the Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin partnership, so it is vital for them to score the chances they create and claim the victory their performances have often deserved, yet not achieved.
