Twist in Ben Godfrey transfer story amid Spurs links – Fabrizio Romano
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Ben Godfrey, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, is now free to leave his club in January – with Ipswich Town making their move.
Are Spurs considering a move for Ben Godfrey?
Over the past week, some contradictory reports have emerged regarding Tottenham’s interest in Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey.
The centre-back has struggled for game time since swapping Everton for Bergamo back in the summer, and some outlets have suggested that the Lilywhites have shown an interest in offering him a route back to the Premier League.
However, other sources over recent days have claimed that it was Atalanta who offered the defender to Spurs, but the North London side are prioritising other alternatives instead.
Fabrizio Romano provides Ben Godfrey update
Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that the Englishman is no longer part of Atalanta’s plans, with the club’s decision to leave him out of the Super Cup being the confirmation of that.
The journalist did not initially name Tottenham or any interested clubs, but he did assert that Gian Piero Gasperini’s men will allow him to leave this month. Romano later took to X to reveal that Ipswich Town are now in talks with Atalanta over a potential loan.
Romano adds that ‘discussions will follow’ over the coming days about Godfrey’s future.
Godfrey is not of the required standard for Spurs
One can understand why Tottenham’s interest would be piqued due to Godfrey’s availability. The former Everton man is quick, versatile, and one would imagine that he will indeed be available on loan, which works to Spurs’ advantage.
However, his career has gone backwards significantly over the last 18 months and most Tottenham fans will feel that he is of the required standard even to be a squad player for a club with ambitions of winning silverware.
