Heung-min Son now has the chance to break a huge Spurs record
Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to extend Heung-min Son’s contract by one year gives the Spurs forward a great chance to break a significant club record.
Tottenham activate option to extend Heung-min Son’s contract
While Son’s contract was about to run out at the end of the season, Spurs had an option to extend it until 2026.
On Tuesday, the club confirmed that they had indeed activated that option, thus ending the speculation over the forward’s future, at least temporarily.
The 32-year-old has struggled to hit his usual heights so far this season and Spurs fans may be hoping that the latest decision to extend his deal might galvanize the forward and help him come back into form.
Son now has a chance to break a huge Tottenham record
Tottenham’s latest decision potentially means that the South Korean could stay at the club for one more season, and if he does do so, he will have an opportunity to break a big record.
Son is currently second on Tottenham’s all-time Premier League appearance list, with 320 to his name in nine and a half seasons at N17, according to Transfermarkt.
The Spurs captain is just 41 games away from Hugo Lloris’ record of 361 appearances for the club, and should he remain at the club until the end of the 2025-26 season, he has a great chance of breaking it.
The contract extension is not a guarantee Son is staying
Tottenham were always going to activate the one-year extension in Son‘s contract as it buys them time to make a decision on the forward’s future. It also ensures they will get a fee for him if they do decide to move him on next summer.
This decision alone is certainly no guarantee that the former Bayer Leverkusen man will be at the club next season.
However, if his performances improve over the next six months and he finds his goalscoring boots, the club might potentially decide to offer him a long-term deal.
