Although Tottenham have taken the option to extend Heung-min Son’s contract, the forward is not entirely happy as he was hoping for a different outcome.
Tottenham’s decision on Heung-min Son’s contract was inevitable
The reports doing the rounds over the last few months over Son potentially leaving Spurs on a free transfer at the end of this season were always laughable.
It was common knowledge that the Lilywhites had the option to extend the forward’s deal until 2026, and it did not come as a surprise when the club decided to activate it last week.
While the club have protected their asset by extending Son’s deal, his long-term future at Spurs remains unclear, with the Tottenham captain continuing to struggle for form.
Son was hoping for a different outcome
Speaking after Spurs activated the one-year extension, the 32-year-old remarked that he loves the club and that it is an honour to potentially go beyond his tenth season at N17.
While Tottenham’s decision does put an end to the speculation over Son‘s immediate future, at least temporarily, ESPN say that the forward’s camp was hoping for a different outcome.
The report claims that the long-serving Spurs man and his entourage were hopeful that the club would offer him a fresh, long-term agreement.
However, it is revealed that Tottenham never reached out to the South Korean man’s camp for talks and simply decided to activate the extension.
Son will have to prove himself to get a long-term deal
Son has been a fantastic servant to Tottenham and fiercely loyal over the years. Most Spurs fans would love nothing more than to see him hoist aloft a trophy as captain.
However, one cannot shy away from the fact that he has been extremely poor this season, almost in every single facet of his play.
If Postecoglou wants to build a side that can challenge the best teams in the Premier League, he has to be ruthless and cannot afford room for sentiment when it comes to selection or recruitment.
Son has to prove over the remaining months of the season that he can still contribute consistently if he wants a three-year deal.
