The situation surrounding Richarlison’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is gathering momentum, with reports suggesting that the Brazilian international’s persistent injury troubles could lead to an unexpected departure from north London.

Tottenham’s squad reshaping under Ange Postecoglou

Under the management of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur have taken significant steps in trimming the excess from their squad, ensuring a leaner and more competitive group of players.

The departure of the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, and Ryan Sessegnon during the summer transfer window exemplified a clear strategy to remove individuals who no longer fit into the club’s plans.

One player who has seemingly been on the fringes, albeit for different reasons, is Richarlison.

The forward arrived at Tottenham in the summer of 2022, commanding a hefty £60 million fee after an impressive spell at Everton.

However, injuries have severely hampered his ability to contribute meaningfully to the team, and momentum has been hard to come by for the 27-year-old.

Despite his fitness issues, Richarlison’s performances when available have shown flashes of the quality that made him a standout at Everton, but his inability to maintain fitness has meant he has been unable to cement a consistent place in the starting eleven under Ange Postecoglou.

Richarlison could be sold due to fitness

Darren Lewis, speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, revealed that Tottenham may be open to selling Richarlison due to his ongoing fitness struggles. According to Lewis, Spurs would consider a reasonable offer for the player.

He said: “I am deeply concerned about Richarlison because you can’t guarantee he’s going to stay fit. He hasn’t been fit for a prolonged period since moving from Everton,” The host said.

“You know, that is the reason why if you guys got a good offer for him my understanding is that the club would sell because he just can’t stay fit, yes, when he is fit, there is a player there, but you need someone who you can rely on.”

What does the future hold for Richarlison?

The prospect of Tottenham parting ways with the 27-year-old forward may seem drastic, but given his injury record, it is not entirely unfounded.

His lengthy contract, which runs until 2027, provides Spurs with some leverage in negotiations, yet it also means any potential suitors would need to assess the risk of acquiring a player with such a chequered fitness history.

The Brazillian forward’s immediate focus will be on proving his worth on the pitch. Ange Postecoglou has indicated that the forward could feature in Tottenham’s upcoming clash with Arsenal, a high-stakes fixture that offers a prime opportunity for the Brazilian to silence his critics and showcase his abilities.

Tottenham, meanwhile, continue their search for a versatile forward to complement their attacking options.

Should Richarlison fail to find form and fitness, it is likely that Spurs will intensify efforts to strengthen their frontline, which could ultimately signal the end of his tenure in north London.
