Tottenham hit with nasty Carabao Cup and FA Cup fixture schedule
After the draw for the FA Cup fourth round was made on Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur now have a Carabao Cup semi-final headache in February.
Tottenham has had difficult cup draws this season
If Tottenham are to win either the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup this season, no one can accuse them of having had an easy path to the final.
The Lilywhites have had an extremely difficult run in the League Cup, having to overcome both Man City and Man Utd in previous rounds, and now finding themselves in a semifinal tussle with Liverpool, with either Arsenal or Newcastle waiting for them in the final.
Spurs discovered on Sunday that if they are to progress to the latter stages of the FA Cup, they will have to once again do it the hard way as a trip to Villa Park awaits them in the fourth round.
Spurs have just one day rest between two huge fixtures
To make matters worse, Tottenham found out that they will travel to the Midlands to take on Villa on Saturday, 8 February.
Just two days prior to that fixture (Thursday, 6 February), they will have to make the trip to Anfield for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
With Spurs carrying a slender lead to Merseyside, there is no doubt that they will be in for a physically and emotionally draining battle.
To recover from that and make a trip to Villa Park less than 48 hours later will be extremely challenging for Ange Postecoglou‘s side. Of course, the fixture is subject to change for potential TV coverage and could move to the Sunday, but even that would be a fast turnaround for Ange and his players.
These two fixtures could dictate Postecoglou’s future at Spurs
A top-four finish now looks beyond Tottenham, which is why one would expect Postecoglou to put a lot of focus on the cup competitions, with the Australian needing to win a trophy for this campaign to be considered a successful one.
That is why these two games against Liverpool and Villa could go a long way towards determining the Australian’s future at N17.
The 59-year-old will be hoping he has close to a fully fit squad by that time so that he can rotate his XI while still putting out a decent side.
