Tottenham suffer Postecoglou first in FA Cup win over Tamworth
Tottenham Hotspur did something new under Ange Postecoglou in their FA Cup third-round clash against Tamworth on Sunday.
Spurs made hard work of Tamworth
Some Tottenham fans might have been expecting a walk in the park when their side was drawn against Tamworth, who play four divisions below the Premier League outfit.
However, instead, what they got was an extremely timid display, with the Lilywhites needing extra time to overcome the non-league side.
Postecoglou rested several key players but was forced to call on the cavalry, with Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, Dominic Solanke, Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence coming on to ensure that Tottenham avoided a historic upset.
Tottenham suffer an unwanted first under Postecoglou
Postecoglou would not have been too pleased that his players had to play 30 extra minutes, given that they have a big North London derby coming up on Wednesday. However, he can take heart from the fact that Arsenal were also forced to play extra time against Man Utd.
Tottenham have had no issues finding the back of the net under the Australian coach, but they set an unfortunate record for the first time under the 59-year-old on Sunday.
According to The Standard, it was the first game in Postecoglou’s 18-month Spurs tenure which ended goalless after 90 minutes.
Tottenham edging close to Man Utd’s record
A 0-0 is the last thing that one would expect when they tune in to see Spurs play. In fact, the club have not had a scoreless draw in the Premier League since well before Postecoglou arrived.
It has been an astonishing 101 games since Tottenham were involved in a 0-0 draw in the Premier League. The current league record is held by Man Utd, who went 114 matches without a scoreless draw under Sir Alex Ferguson.
That means that Spurs will clinch the record well below the end of this season if they continue their habit of avoiding goalless draws.
