Dominic Solanke left with egg on his face after non-league football claim
Dominic Solanke has failed to walk the talk and has been left embarrassed by his struggles against Tamworth in the FA Cup third round after the statement he made last year.
Tottenham make hard work of Tamworth
Ange Postecoglou might have been hoping for an easy afternoon at Lamb Park as his side faced off against a team which players four divisions below them in the English pyramid.
However, in the end, Tottenham had to toil and suffer, needing extra time to overcome the non-league opposition.
Postecoglou had to bring on his big guns like Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, and Heung-min Son to ensure Spurs limped over the line and that sealed their passage to the fourth round.
Dominic Solanke left with egg on his face after his previous comments
Solanke came on in place of Mikey Moore on 68 minutes and played around an hour of football in total, and he was far from effective.
According to TBR Football, the centre-forward had 19 touches of the ball, completed just five of his attempted seven passes, failed to complete the one dribble he attempted, and did not register a single shot on target.
Solanke was far from Tottenham’s worst performer on the day, but his performance has made the comments he made last year look silly.
The Spurs man suggested at the time that he would score a century of goals in a single season if he was playing non-league football.
When asked how many he would score at the non-league level, Solanke told Rising Ballers: “I’d probably say a good few a game. I’m saying triple digits. 100 and something.”
Non-league football has its own challenges
While Premier League footballers are physically and technically far superior to non-league players, playing in the lower leagues has its own challenges.
One of them is the state of the pitches, with the Tottenham players evidently finding it very hard to play on the artificial surface at Tamworth, with the ball constantly bobbling.
There have been a lot of hot takes from Spurs fans about what the team’s struggles against Tamworth mean. However, it is unfair to judge the Tottenham players on their performance on Sunday as these players are not used to those kinds of conditions.
