Premier League season to forget for Spurs and Ange Postecoglou

Once upon a time, Tottenham finishing outside the top six would have been considered a poor season. Yet as things stand, Spurs are 14th in the Premier League Table, after seven losses, three draws and 11 defeats.

A key factor in this unthinkable position is the injuries which have obliterated the Tottenham first-team squad, with the defence in particular significantly weakened throughout much of the season.

However, while this would be a difficult situation for any manager, Ange Postecoglou has come under criticism for his stubbornness in continuing to play his preferred style regardless of the players available.

Danny Murphy voices concerns over Ange Postecoglou at Spurs

Speaking to OLBG, Danny Murphy has shared his opinion on Postecoglou. Murphy, who spent one season of his playing career at Spurs, has some kind words to say about the manager who guarantees ‘entertainment’, but he believes the 59-year-old has been too ‘single-minded’.

He said: “I think it’s a hard one with Tottenham because there’s been some really good highs and some really good performances and that’s because of what Ange Postecoglou does. But I’m a big believer in being able to manage games as a coach and as players and they don’t do that well at all.

“I think that ends up being his responsibility. I’ve never seen a team consistently try and do the same thing continually in a game like that, in a 90-minute game. There has to be moments in the game where you protect or you slow things down, or you retreat, especially this season because of the injuries.

While Murphy has called on Postecoglou to adapt his style to prevent injuries, he does not believe the former Australia head coach is solely responsible for so many Spurs players being sidelined.

“The other thing is the injuries really when you think of the muscular injuries they continually cover big distances when as players, especially the centre backs and have then been rushed back into games afterwards,” Murphy continued.

“I don’t think you can blame Ange for that, the people in the medical team and sports science department have to take some responsibility there.

“I do feel that Ange has brought lots of good things to the Premier League and to Tottenham. I think there’s been a real excitement, an energy and an excitement about Tottenham when you watch them generally. Especially if you’re not a Tottenham fan, it’s great because you know you’re going to see goals, you know you’re going to see entertainment.

“But I do understand some of the fans’ frustration more recently when you’re going through a bad spell and you’ve got real injury problems.

“I don’t think Ange has helped himself with the supporters by being adamant on being really single-minded on carrying on the same way. I think he could have helped himself a little bit more.

Despite sounding his concerns over Postecoglou, Murphy has revealed he is not eager to see Tottenham sack their current manager.

He continued: “They’ve got some great young players and there’s a lot to like about them. There’s this quench for a trophy for the Tottenham fans and let’s see where they are at the end of the season. I think it would be a shame to see Ange go.

“But if they struggle and keep struggling and ultimately if they fall away, if they don’t win anything then questions are going to be asked.”

How can Postecoglou save Tottenham’s season?

While Postecoglou will not have given up on the Premier League, it is difficult to see how Spurs will compete for a Conference League spot, let alone the top four. Although many of Tottenham’s performances have had positives, they are not earning enough points and that is a problem.

Ultimately Postecoglou’s hopes may rest on delivering Spurs a trophy for the first time since their League Cup victory in 2008.

With a 1-0 lead over Liverpool after the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, Tottenham’s trip to Anfield on February 6 will be the most important match Postecoglou has taken charge of since making the move to England.
