Everton vs Tottenham: Paul Merson predicts Premier League score
Paul Merson provides some hope to Tottenham as they try once again to build a rhythm in the Premier League after their injury crisis. This week, the Lilywhites face an away trip to Everton.
Tottenham need points and momentum before key cup fixtures
Tottenham’s recent wins in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup brought a week of hope and levity to Spurs. However, their loss in the North London Derby has left Tottenham languishing in 14th in the Premier League table.
While there is still some optimism around Tottenham’s position in the cup tournaments, Spurs now urgently need points on the board in the Premier League.
Additionally, with two important upcoming fixtures in the Europa League and a season-defining second leg in the Carabao Cup semi-final, Tottenham would benefit from getting into a winning run as soon as possible.
Paul Merson predicts Tottenham win against Everton
In his predictions column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson predicts Spurs will come out ahead of Everton in this fixture.
Merson said “Tottenham are always Spursy, but I believe they will have too much for Everton in this game. Spurs will open the game up and I don’t think Everton have the firepower to outscore the visitors. The hosts can only hope of keeping it tight at the back, but I’m not sure they can do that for long here.
“Ange Postecoglou’s men have suffered due to their two first-choice centre-backs being unavailable. If both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were fit to play, I wouldn’t mind James Maddison starting ahead of Dejan Kulusevski. But with both of them not playing, Spurs need some steel in midfield and that’s why I’d prefer Kulusevski in there.
“Everton will be dreading the possibility of an open game here and that will play into Spurs’ hands.”
Prediction: Everton 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
David Moyes has a mixed history against Tottenham
Across his managerial career, David Moyes has beaten Tottenham on 10 occasions. There have also been 12 draws and 16 losses during his 4 different EPL tenures.
Moyes has historically required three games in a new position before claiming a win against Tottenham. The differences between his team and the past Spurs sides cannot be compared, but it is indicative that Moyes has previously required time to get his team organised against generally stronger opposition.
With a draw and a win against Ange Postecoglou last season with West Ham, there will be a concern that Moyes knows how to stifle Spurs. Nevertheless, this match may come too soon for Moyes to get this struggling Everton team into shape.
