Marcus Edwards update is bad news for Tottenham Hotspur
The latest update on Marcus Edwards could spell bad news for Tottenham Hotspur are their hopes of recouping a sell-on fee for the talented winger.
Sporting Lisbon have had enough of Marcus Edwards
Speculation linking Marcus Edwards with a return to Tottenham has been a staple of almost every transfer window over the last few years. However, it now appears like this will be the window during which the winger finally leaves Sporting Lisbon.
Sport Witness have now relayed reports from both Record and A Bola, which claim that Edwards‘ time at the Portuguese capital has run out, due to his ‘indiscipline’ and ‘recurring delays’.
It is explained that the Tottenham academy graduate’s attitude is starting to grate on everyone at the club, with the wide-man accused of having a ‘commitment to wasting the talent’ he has.
Sporting Lisbon prepared to sell Marcus Edwards for a discount
The report points out that Edwards was not even in the matchday squad for Sporting’s league cup final defeat to Benfica – a sign that his time at the club is coming to an end.
The Englishman is seen as a ‘devaluating asset’, which is why work is underway to get him out as soon as possible.
In fact, it is asserted that Sporting would even be willing to loan out the former Tottenham man this month with an option to buy for just €8m-€10m (£6.7m-£8.4m) in the summer.
It is explained that the deal would be even more discounted for Spurs as they still retain a 35 per cent sell-on clause on their academy graduate.
Unfortunately, that means even if Edwards does secure a loan move with an option to buy, Spurs would only receive £2m-£3m from their sell-on clause.
Ange Postecoglou will not want a bad apple at Spurs
The current regime under Postecoglou and Johan Lange has evidently prioritised not just signing players of the right tactical profile but also ones who possess the right attitude.
The Australian coach will certainly not want to risk bringing a bad apple to the club as that could have an adverse effect on the squad morale.
Even if Tottenham had seriously considered a move for Edwards in the past, this saga at Sporting might have ended the 26-year-old’s chances of sealing a return to N17.
