Ange Postecoglou will be sacked and I pity Spurs fans – Ex-Arsenal star says

Arsenal legend, Emmanuel Petit, has offered his verdict on Ange Postecoglou after Spurs fell to a midweek defeat against his former side.

Ange Postecoglou has struggled in his second season at Spurs

Tottenham had a mixed first season under Ange Postecoglou. Despite sitting top of the Premier League Table early on, Spurs had to settle for fifth place, which was only good enough for Europa League qualification.

However, Postecoglou received plaudits for his attacking brand of football, which always promised an exciting game. There was hope that in his second season, Spurs would be able to combine entertainment with strong results, but this has failed to be the case.

This hope has been diminished as while Postecoglou has continued trying to entertain with his team’s football, Tottenham’s points total in the Premier League is appalling.

In fact, if Spurs lose one more match, they will have suffered the same number of league defeats as they did last season, despite playing far fewer matches.

Emmanuel Petit calls on Spurs to sack Ange Postecoglou

Emmanuel Petit was speaking to talkSPORT after Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat in the North London derby and revealed he felt Postecoglou’s days at Spurs were numbered.

He said: “I was watching Ange Postecoglou and he must be feeling really alone on the pitch tonight.

“I think things are probably coming to the end for him. I think that something has to change.

“We can see the league, we can see the faces of the players tonight on the pitch and they look so miserable, nobody looks like themselves. As I said, I think something has to change at Spurs so I think he will get the sack.

“I feel pity for the Spurs fan. Honestly, I feel pity. Game after game, I’ve watched this team and I’m thinking, is it Postecoglou’s fault?”

Petit believes Spurs are trying their best, but this has not been enough to earn them the points they desperately need.

He continued: “When I look at this team, I have no idea what they want to do on the pitch, what kind of system, what kind of movements, even the commitment and the behaviour of the players.

“I know that they give everything on the pitch, but that’s not enough. When you look at the quality individually and collectively in this team, something has been broken.

“They’ve been losing so many games, they’re dropping down the table, they’re not far the relegation zone. We’re talking about a team that should be playing for the top position in the Premier League.

“So this is something for me that worries me the most. If I was a Spurs fan – and I’m not in the board, I’m not Mr Levy – but to be honest with you, something has to change.”

Petit has played down Tottenham’s injuries, insisting that they have enough quality on the pitch to be performing better than they are.

He said: “Injuries are something very important to deal with but they have enough quality in the squad.

“Look at the players on the pitch, look at Son – he was amazing on the pitch for five years. Maddison this season – Maddison last year was such a great player, what has happened to him?

“Something is broken in this team and you can’t sack all of the players and so you have to make the easiest decision and that’s to sack the manager.

“I don’t like saying that and I feel for Postecoglou, but he deserves to be sacked because they’re going down game after game so change something.”

Emmanuel Petit is blaming Postecoglou for the failure of Tottenham’s players

Petit has seemingly blamed Postecoglou for the decline of players such as James Maddison and Heung-min-Son. However, it is difficult to see how it is Postecoglou who has made those players worse. Maddison was on fire under the Aussie before his ankle injury last season, while Son bagged 17 league goals.

It is easier to blame the manager than the players and Petit has essentially admitted this by saying it is not possible to sack all the players. This does not mean blaming the manager is the right thing to do.

Currently, Tottenham are in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and in the middle of a transfer window. Unless they enter the relegation zone, something needing to change now is not the case as long as a trophy is in sight.

Sacking Postecoglou would be disruptive and bringing a new manager in with so many players out injured would make little sense. Scrutinising the manager is fair enough, but timing can be critical and now is not the time to be making dramatic changes.
