Simon Jordan’s criticism of Tottenham’s key players
Speaking on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan dissected Tottenham’s squad depth, expressing doubts about the club’s direction under Ange Postecoglou.
Jordan highlighted three players—James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, and Timo Werner—who, in his opinion, are not the calibre of talent that will elevate Spurs to serious contenders.
He said: “There’s been games in there where they’ve beaten… I went to watch the quarter-final of the [Carabao] Cup against Manchester United and what I saw was two very poor sides.
“But they won a cup quarter-final against Manchester United, they’ve smashed Southampton 5-0, there are some results in there.
“The challenge for me is I look at players like [James] Maddison, I look at some of the signings. Maddison’s a good player, technically he’s a good player, but do you win things with players like James Maddison?
“I look at some of the signings like Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner, Timo Werner is a speedboat without a brain.
“I look at these guys and I think, ‘How are Tottenham going to kick on as a football club?’ Despite spending decent money on [Dominic] Solanke and decent money every single year now. You can’t argue that Spurs are spending a few quid but the side doesn’t seem to change.”
Evaluating Tottenham’s underperforming stars
From an analytical perspective, the three players singled out by Simon Jordan have indeed had mixed seasons.
Brennan Johnson, while leading Tottenham’s scoring charts with 12 goals and three assists in 32 appearances, has shown flashes of brilliance but remains inconsistent.
His habit of alternating between standout performances and subdued outings has made it difficult for Tottenham to rely on him in crucial moments.
James Maddison, once heralded as a marquee signing, has struggled to establish himself as an indispensable part of Postecoglou’s setup.
The midfielder’s frequent omission from big matches raises questions about his role in the squad and whether tactical factors or other concerns are influencing his limited appearances.
Timo Werner, on the other hand, appears to be a misfit for Tottenham’s long-term plans. The German forward has been frustrating in the final third, with erratic decision-making often overshadowing his undeniable pace and work rate.
Werner’s return to RB Leipzig seems inevitable, and his time at Tottenham will likely be remembered as a brief and underwhelming stint.
