Heung-min Son reveals what he told Archie Gray about playing centre-back

Tottenham’s young players have been a constant silver lining to a mostly underwhelming season so far. Spurs captain Heung-min Son has been discussing Archie Gray’s qualities and his hopes for the player.

Playing in the Europa League and Premier League, across four different positions at the age of 18, is nothing short of extraordinary.

Joining Tottenham last summer for a fee of around £40m, Gray’s arrival brought a sense of excitement. His transfer was the 4th most expensive for an 18-year-old. While that kind of figure brings with it a sense of expectation, few could have anticipated such a significant impact in his first year.

Archie Gray has played almost 2000 minutes across all competitions this season. Who knows where Tottenham would be without his technical ability and confidence, which has seen him fill in at centre-back during the team’s injury crisis.

Heung-min Son ‘cannot speak highly enough’ of Archie Gray

Archie Gray’s impact and importance within the squad has not been lost on Spurs captain, Heung-min Son.

When asked about the teenager, Son said (Mirror): “I cannot speak highly enough of him. He is working so hard, what a lovely kid. On and off the pitch he is fantastic.

“I’ve seen so many things with young players, in the media they can get pushed so much and go the wrong way. So I don’t want to celebrate him too much, I want him to stay on the floor as he is now.

“He is a very humble guy, I want him to stay as long as possible as a boy. But as a player, I don’t have to say much. Whatever the team needs – centre-back, right-back, left-back, midfielder – he can play any position.

“I spoke to him as well and said to him that playing centre back will help him in the future. He is having to deal with big strikers and that physicality will definitely help him. Any position that he gets game time in, is always good for him. He’s doing an amazing job.”

Archie Gray’s success shows value in Spurs transfer approach

Tottenham’s injury difficulties have brought the club’s squad depth under scrutiny. The team’s lack of points and position in the bottom half of the Premier League table has also led to questions of whether Spurs needed more ready-made senior players.

Undoubtedly, Tottenham need more cover with Destiny Udogie and now Dominic Solanke facing extended periods of absence. However, With Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall now mainstays in the starting XI (and most importantly, playing well), the value in bringing in outstanding young talent is clear.
