A season of extremes for Tottenham Hotspur

It has been anything but a straightforward campaign for Tottenham Hotspur under Ange Postecoglou in his second season in charge.

From moments of sheer brilliance to unexpected collapses, Tottenham fans have endured a season that has tested their patience, resolve, and hope at every turn.

The start of the campaign seemed promising as the North London club managed some impressive victories, including a resounding 3-0 triumph over Manchester United, as well as a 4-0 win against Manchester City, yet inconsistency soon crept in.

Defeat to struggling Crystal Palace encapsulated the erratic nature of Tottenham’s performances, leaving fans unsure of what to expect each week.

While their Premier League form has been nothing short of disappointing, leaving them languishing in 15th place, there have been glimpses of optimism.

A strong showing in the Carabao Cup has seen Tottenham reach the semi-finals, and they are well-poised to make the final with a win in the second leg against Liverpool.

These contrasting fortunes highlight a campaign defined by peaks of promise and troughs of frustration.

The data behind Spurs’ stressful reputation

A recent study conducted by CasinoHawks has revealed Tottenham Hotspur as the third most stressful club to support in the Premier League, behind Chelsea and Manchester United.

The research analysed several factors, including win and loss percentages, injuries, defensive errors, and penalty concessions, to compile a “stress index” ranking of all 20 clubs in England’s top flight.

Tottenham scored a stress index of 72.2, based on figures that illustrate the nerve-shredding nature of their season. The team has a win percentage of 46.6%, offset by a loss percentage of 37.9%.

A staggering 14 matches have been lost by just one goal, while nine games have been narrowly won in the same fashion. The team have also lost eleven games in which they were considered favourites to win.

The findings also highlight Tottenham’s struggles with errors and injuries. They have averaged 0.81 errors per goal conceded and 1.02 injuries per goal scored.

Furthermore, conceding goals late in matches has added to their woes, with the team shipping 0.28 goals in the final ten minutes of games.

The study noted that Liverpool, in contrast, emerged as the least stressful club to support, while Leicester City, West Ham United, and Arsenal were also among the more relaxing teams to follow.

Why are Tottenham so stressful to support?

The data provides compelling insight into why Tottenham fans find themselves on edge. The club’s win percentage of 46.6% is poor for a side expected to be in the Champions League places, the narrow margins of their matches also amplify the stress for supporters.

Losing 14 games by a single goal not only frustrates but also leaves fans wondering what could have been.

The psychological strain of conceding late goals, at a rate of 0.28 per game in the final ten minutes, encapsulates why Tottenham matches are rarely straightforward.

Each game feels like a gamble, where fans oscillate between hope and despair until the final whistle.

As Tottenham navigate the remainder of the season, it remains to be seen whether Ange Postecoglou can steady the ship, but one thing is certain: being a Spurs fan is not for the faint-hearted.
