A season of woes for Tottenham Hotspur

This season has been one of relentless challenges for Tottenham Hotspur, both on and off the pitch, as results under Ange Postecoglou have faltered and the medical room has become increasingly crowded.

The current crisis sees eleven key players out of action, with many having been sidelined for weeks, leaving the squad stretched thin and fans frustrated.

Although the severity of this season’s situation is undeniable, the pattern of injuries plaguing Tottenham is not a new phenomenon.

In fact, this concerning trend can be traced back over five years, suggesting deeper underlying issues within the club’s setup.

The injury statistic under Antonio Conte

According to the Daily Mail, under the stewardship of Antonio Conte, Tottenham finished the 2022/23 campaign with one of the highest injury tallies in the Premier League, only behind Chelsea, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest.

Conte’s intense, high-energy football style and the hasty return of key players contributed significantly to the problem, as Spurs concluded that season with 35 players unavailable at some stage, 132 games missed due to injuries, and a staggering total of 1,085 days lost to competitive action.

The seeds of Tottenham’s current predicament appear to have been sown long before Postecoglou’s arrival, although the Australian manager now faces the daunting task of managing this recurring crisis.

The grim statistics of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure

Under Postecoglou, the report states that Tottenham’s first-team squad suffered 37 injuries across the 2023/24 season, a slight increase from the 35 recorded under Antonio Conte.

More concerning, however, is that 22 different players were affected during Postecoglou’s first season in charge, a league-topping statistic that underscored the wide-reaching nature of the issue.

Tottenham also led the league in injuries per 1,000 minutes of play, averaging 7.8—a telling indicator of the squad’s fragility.

The trend also shows no signs of abating this season, as eleven players, including eight first-teamers, are sidelined. Many of these injuries are significant, with recovery timelines spanning weeks, further amplifying the club’s struggles.
