A rollercoaster season for Heung Min Son

For Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son, the 2024/25 season has been far from smooth. The Korean international is known for his high standards, but he has struggled to stay consistent, largely due to the packed schedule he faces.

Last night’s Europa League clash against Hoffenheim, however, showed just how important he can still be. Spurs needed a positive result, and Son stepped up. His crucial brace secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the German side.

Son has reached double figures with 10 goals and added 7 assists in all competitions this season. However, fatigue has very evidently affected his performances.

Questions were raised regarding his future at Spurs with his contract ending this summer. However, it became clear that Son was part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans when he extended his stay at Spurs by another year.

Spurs activated the one-year extension clause in his contract, ensuring he stays at the club until the summer of 2026.

Beyond that, it remains to be seen whether Son will be offered a new long-term deal by Spurs, or whether he will have to part ways with the club after a decade of service.

Spurs fans react to Heung-min Son’s Hoffenheim display

Following the win, SpursWeb’s tweet asking fans for their thoughts on Heung-min Son’s performance sparked mixed reactions.

Many fans praised the Korean international for his ability to deliver under pressure despite his visible fatigue. One fan commented, “Tired and still scores two.” Another echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Great finisher… even when he’s got heavy legs and out of form.”

Others pointed out his inconsistency, noting the need for rest. One fan said, “He looked off it the whole game, either fatigued or carrying an injury, but he still has the quality to score two goals.” Another added, “The guy’s 32; we can’t expect him to have the same intensity as before. He still presses well but can’t do it for 90 minutes anymore.”

Not all comments were supportive. A section of the fanbase criticised his performance despite the goals, with one remarking, “Played terrible the whole game — one lucky goal, one good goal.” Another called for him to be benched, saying, “Bang average. Passing and crossing below par. He’s still a legend, but it might be time to use him as a super sub.”

Some fans also took issue with Son’s celebration, where he shushed the crowd. “Can’t believe he shushed the fans when he played awfully,” one reply read. Another commented, “Shushing the fans when he’s poor 9/10 matches. Terrible mentality.”

Despite the division, most fans agreed that Son’s goals ultimately secured the win, with one summing it up: “He gave us a win, and that’s all I care about. Well done.”

Should Heung-min Son be benched for future Spurs games?

This question divides opinion, and the reality is far from straightforward. Some fans think Son should be used as a substitute, giving 17-year-old Mikey Moore more chances on the left wing. However, Moore remains a raw talent. His fresher legs may create a false sense of superiority when coming off the bench.

Injuries to key alternatives like Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert, and Brennan Johnson have left Ange Postecoglou with limited options. As a result, he has to play Son regularly. Dominic Solanke’s six-week injury has also ruled out Richarlison playing on the left, as he is needed in the central role.

Spurs were reportedly linked with Jonathan David and Tyler Dibling as potential attacking reinforcements, though neither is a natural left winger. While adding depth wouldn’t have solved all the issues, it could have provided Postecoglou with more rotation options to ease Son’s workload. However, nothing concrete developed from these links, leaving the squad stretched thin.

Right now, Son’s heavy workload makes it unfair to judge him. Postecoglou is doing his best to manage his minutes, but Son’s experience and ability to score important goals are keeping him in the starting XI. Until Spurs have more fit players, Son remains a key figure despite the criticism.
