Archie Gray has had an unexpected season at Spurs

Archie Gray has been having a testing season at Tottenham. When Ange Postecoglou was playing him as a full-back in the Europa League, many supporters felt he was being made to play away from his strongest position, the centre of midfield.

Fast forward a few months and Gray has been taking on an even greater challenge. The 18-year-old has been playing as a central defender, making 13 appearances in the position whilst covering for Tottenham’s injured players at the back.

Spurs have experienced some issues in defence and have only recorded one clean sheet in the Premier League when Gray has played. However, Gray has largely been praised for his contributions, with Postecoglou describing him as ‘quality’ and ‘really solid’.

Archie Gray has been helped by his fellow Spurs centre-backs

While Gray has been handed a tough task, there are more senior centre-backs in the Tottenham first-team squad with wisdom to impart.

Gray has revealed that he has received help and advice from Tottenham’s more experienced centre-backs, including a player he regards as one of his best friends at the club.

Appearing alongside Postecoglou in a press conference, Gray said: “Obviously I get a bit of advice from Radu who I’ve been playing alongside a lot. I speak to Ben a lot as he’s one of my best friends at the club. Cuti and Micky have been helping me a lot as well.” (Football London

The student has surpassed the teacher at Spurs

It is interesting to hear Gray has been receiving advice from a number of defenders at Spurs, particularly Radu Dragusin. Despite the Romanian’s experience as a centre-back, many would say Gray has performed better when the duo have linked up in Tottenham’s defence.

Although it is unlikely that Gray will continue to play as a centre-back in the future, his composure on the ball and technical ability will see him go a long way. One day, he will be the player inspiring and giving advice to his teammates.
