Spurs are in a better place than when I arrived – says Ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou explains why he believes Spurs have made plenty of progress since he took over 18 months ago even though the results have not been favourable this season.
Have Spurs gone backwards this season?
There is no doubt that Postecoglou overachieved in his first season in charge, guiding the Lilywhites to a fifth-place finish despite losing Harry Kane before the start of the season.
However, it would be difficult to argue against the idea that Tottenham have gone two steps backwards this season, with the club now languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table.
The Australian’s position continues to come under scrutiny, with some reports suggesting that his days in the Spurs hot seat might be numbered if he does not manage to arrest the team’s slide quickly.
Ange Postecoglou bullish about Spurs progress
However, the Spurs head coach believes that even if he leaves now, he is leaving the club in a better place than they were when he arrived.
The 59-year-old insisted that the North London side have improved across all areas and suggested that the club will see the benefits of the foundation being laid at the moment in the years to come.
Postecoglou told Football.London: “I am absolutely 100 per cent confident that we are in a much better place in all areas of the club today than we were when I started. Absolutely in all areas.
“They haven’t all been my decisions but when I look at the club now to where it was, yeah absolutely. It had to change otherwise…I didn’t come into a club that had years of success. So you either change or you keep doing what you are doing.
“My brief was to come in and change things. That is what I have done. Like I said, I am a really firm believer that we are in better shape. I think the squad that I inherited needed to change because a lot of the experienced players were coming to an end or time to move on. So that had to change.
“I think the squad we have got together now, they are an exciting squad and when they are all fit, I think the club will benefit, not just this year but for many years to come. We have some outstanding people who have come into the club in all areas, in every facet that I think will contribute to this club being successful in the future. I firmly believe that.
“Now, the only evidence that most people want to look at is where we are right now in terms of our performances, particularly in the league. But from my perspective as somebody who walked into a club that wanted change and needed change, I have no doubt we are in a much better place for what the club needs for success.”
Tottenham’s recruitment decisions may prove prudent
While it is difficult to agree with Postecoglou unequivocally that Tottenham have made progress, there is no doubt that there is a lot more synergy between the coaching staff and the recruitment department than there was during previous regimes.
The jury is still out on some of Johan Lange‘s work, but I believe that just like with former Spurs director of football, Damien Comolli, the Dane’s decisions might look better in the future.
The likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and Antonin Kinsky have the potential to develop into future stars for Tottenham.
