Postecoglou warns Daniel Levy he is ‘playing with fire’ over transfers
Ange Postecoglou has sent a clear message to Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy by stating that the club are playing with fire by leaving it so late to do their transfer business.
Tottenham’s transfer inactivity has frustrated fans
Coming into the transfer window, there was hope among Spurs fans that the club would do a lot of their business early, given the injury crisis currently ongoing at Hotspur Way.
Spurs did make a brisk start to the month by signing Antonin Kinsky just a few days into the transfer window, but since then, it has gone completely quiet on the transfer front for the Lilywhites.
With just over a week left until the window slams shut, Tottenham are now scrambling for signings, with reports indicating that Spurs are still determined to bring at least two players through the door.

The Tottenham head coach has now spoken about the club’s lack of signings, and he did not hide the fact that the squad is in desperate need of help.
While Postecoglou couched his statement by diplomatically stating that the recruitment team are working hard to bring players in, he admitted that they were ‘playing with fire’ by leaving things so late.
When asked if Spurs do have money to spend, the Australian said (via The Daily Mail): “Don’t ask those questions, it’s not something I’m involved in. My discussions with Johan (Lange, technical director) and the club have been about trying to get some help for the players and then I’ll let them do their jobs.
“There’s not a lot more depth that I can give to it because, within the context of that, I’ve still got to manage this team and get them ready. I’m not out there trying to find opportunities for the club. That’s not my role at this time. There isn’t the time to do it. But I have daily communication with Johan and he’s trying everything he can to get the help we need.
“I don’t think I’m stating anything other than the obvious and for me to come in here and say something else would be disingenuous. This playing group needs help, there’s no doubt about that.
“We’re playing with fire by not bringing anyone in but the flip side is that the club are doing everything in their power to try and change that situation.”
Is Spurs’ transfer inactivity a sign of a lack of trust in Postecoglou?
The fact that Tottenham have not been in a hurry to back Postecoglou this window suggests that there are major doubts behind the scenes at Hotspur Way over whether he is the man to take the club forward.
If the Spurs hierarchy are not confident that the 59-year-old will be here beyond the end of the season, or potentially even for a few more months, then one can understand their hesitance to back him with big-money signings.
One suspects that the club will look to make low-risk additions, such as loan signings. so that the next manager is not stuck with the players who do not necessarily suit his system.
