Paul Merson predicts Tottenham vs Leicester score, but it might be unpopular
Tottenham host Leicester as both sides are desperate to secure a win and earn points in the Premier League. Paul Merson believes Tottenham’s absences could be the difference in a significant bottom-half fixture.
Tottenham’s injury issues refuse to relent
As the whistle blew at the end of Spurs’ 3-2 Europa League win in Hoffenheim, several of the players collapsed to the ground.
The injuries in Tottenham’s squad have made many of their first-choice players unavailable. Additionally, the reduced depth is crashing the quality and energy of those who can play.
Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are all doubts for Tottenham’s Premier League match against Leicester. The majority of those who played in Germany will have to play again and Tottenham will once again have to battle against fatigue in addition to well-prepared opponents.
Paul Merson predicts another Tottenham loss
Making his predictions at Sportskeeda, Paul Merson believes Leicester may find luck against Tottenham.
Merson said: “I often watch Leicester play and they are now seven games without a win. They start well at times but just can’t find the first goal. Then half-time comes and they get disheartened before losing it all in the second half.
“Leicester are not getting battered like Southampton, they are a decent team. Leicester still have a chance in the relegation battle in my opinion and this is the perfect game because they’re playing Tottenham!
“Considering how Spurs play, Jamie Vardy can cause them a lot of problems in this game. If Leicester can ride their luck and Tottenham have an off day, even if it’s just in front of goal like against Ipswich earlier this season, they have a chance.
“If Leicester and Vardy can trouble Tottenham with their counter-attack, we might witness a result that will set the cat among the pigeons!
“I hope Ange Postecoglou doesn’t leave. If you take Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate out of Liverpool or William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes out of Arsenal, those teams will face problems.
“I know Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are not considered to be at that level just yet, but Spurs are a different team when they both play. Bit unlucky with their injuries, so I would like Postecoglou to get another year in this job.”
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Leicester City
Tottenham must win despite their mitigating circumstances
Tottenham and Leicester are 18th and 19th respectively in the Premier League form table.
Spurs will likely be exhausted once again against Leicester. Any hope of moving up the Premier League table or building form before important cup fixtures depends on Spurs finding any means of winning despite their injuries and fatigue.
The return dates of Spurs’ starting defenders and additional midfielders are creeping tantalisingly closer. If Tottenham can survive this period for one more week, the club’s fortunes may finally turn.
