Pedro Porro reacts to criticism of Postecoglou’s training methods
Pedro Porro has busted the myth that Ange Postecoglou’s high-intensity training methods are the reason behind Tottenham’s terrible injury situation this season.
Tottenham’s alarming injury record under Ange Postecoglou
The one thing that has been constant since Postecoglou took up the Tottenham job has been the spate of muscle injuries that the club have had to deal with.
The absentee list has often been in double-digit, and with the situation repeating itself for the second campaign in a row, many Spurs fans are pointing their fingers at the Australian and his coaching methods, which have come under scrutiny.
The club made some big changes to their medical staff just last year and Postecoglou admitted recently that they have conducted another review of the medical department this season in order to assess if there is something wrong with their procedures.
Pedro Porro explains Postecoglou’s approach to training
There is a perception that training under Postecoglou is always done at high intensity and some have questioned if the demands placed on players are simply too high, given the amount of sprints they have to complete each game.
However, Porro has now explained that it is not simply a case of a one-size-fits-all approach to training under the current regime, revealing that the workload of different players is carefully managed.
The right-back told Football.London: “We have a plan for all of our training. Those players who aren’t playing so much have their own plan to come back and me too, I train at the club but I also do my own work outside the club, recovery work, and prevention of injury.
“Everyone has their own schedule, if the training sessions are less intense it’s for those players coming back, they have the training they need, and also for the players who are playing, we need a lot of recovery.”
Did Postecoglou fall out with Geoff Scott?
Interestingly, this claim by Porro comes at a time when Postecoglou is accused of clashing with the club’s former head of medicine and sports science, Geoff Scott, who left Spurs at the end of last season,
According to some sources, Scott had a falling out with the Tottenham head coach last year over how to manage the workload of the first team and on the recovery of the injured players.
If that is indeed the case, one has to say that Scott will feel his concerns have been vindicated, given the kind of injury situation that Spurs have had on their hands for much of this season.
