Ange Postecoglou provides interesting update on Will Lankshear at Spurs
Ange Postecoglou confesses that Spurs face a complicated decision regarding temporarily offloading Will Lankshear over the coming days, given the injury situation they are currently facing.
19-year-old has shown glimpses of his class
Will Lankshear is rated as one of the most promising young talents in Hotspur Way and the striker’s impressive displays for the Under-21s over the last 18 months have seen him rewarded with first-team opportunities.
The teenager has been thrown into the deep end by being asked to lead the line in a couple of tough Europa League fixtures and he has handled himself admirably, scoring his first senior league goal for the club away at Galatasaray.
However, despite Tottenham’s injury situation, opportunities have been few and far between for the young centre-forward, which raises the question of whether the club would consider sending him out on loan to the EFL for the rest of the season.
Ange Postecoglou says Spurs are still contemplating Will Lankshear’s future
According to reports over recent weeks, plenty of clubs have reached out to Tottenham to express interest in signing Lankshear on loan.
While speaking about the situation two weeks ago, Postecoglou himself confirmed that Spurs will look to send the striker out on loan so that he can get some experience in senior football.
However, the Australian has now slightly changed his tune, admitting that things have become slightly more complicated after the injury to Dominic Solanke.
When asked if he expects Lankshear to seal a temporary move away from Hotspur Way before the February 3 deadline, Postecoglou said (via Football.London): “Yeah I mean we’ll just kind of assess it. Where we sit right now with Dom still being out, we’ve got to be mindful of leaving us with a further player short.”
Solanke’s injury is not reason enough for Spurs to hang onto Lankshear
If Solanke had picked up a serious injury and been ruled out of action for several months, it would make complete sense for Tottenham to hang onto Lankshear.
That is especially true considering Richarlison’s shocking fitness record over the last 12 months, with Postecoglou knowing he cannot rely on the Brazilian.
However, Postecoglou himself says that Spurs are hopeful of having Solanke back fit within six weeks. If the Englishman is only going to miss a handful of matches, it makes little sense to hang on to Lankshear just in case he is needed as a bench option for those few matches.
In fact, if Tottenham feel they need more firepower up front to cover Solanke’s injury, they should instead be investing in an experienced player in the transfer market.
