Postecoglou praises senior Spurs star who is ‘not making excuses’
Ange Postecoglou has made an interesting revelation about James Maddison after the attacking midfielder showed his class in Spurs’ important win over Hoffenheim on Thursday.
James Maddison will feel hard done by
Maddison perhaps has a right to feel hard done by with some of Postecoglou‘s selection decisions this season, with the attacking midfielder often finding himself out of the starting eleven this season despite the team’s continued struggles.
The Englishman is quietly racking up impressive numbers despite not starting regularly, now having nine goals and six assists to his name across all competitions this campaign.
The former Leicester man has been unlucky that Dejan Kulusevski has done so well in the number ten role, but he continues to show his creativity and class whenever he is on the pitch.
Ange Postecoglou praises Maddison’s attitude at Spurs
Postecoglou confesses that the 28-year-old has not always been best pleased with his selection decisions but insisted that the midfielder is not one to sulk or complain.
The Tottenham boss explained that he is being careful in managing Maddison and praised the display that the England international delivered in Germany to help Spurs pick up an important three points in the Europa League.
When asked about his vice-captain’s performance, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Look, Madders was great last night. I think he enjoys having that responsibility.
“Again, it’s been a gripe for him as well because with the team and the way it’s going at the moment, he’s another one I have tried to manage him as best as I can, (rather than) him play every game.
“Creative players are always better when they are fresh. He’s still churning out really good performances. Against Everton, he was really disappointed but he worked his socks off. It wasn’t for the want of trying.
“With Madders, it’s always moments. The moments last night – he was clinical. Against Everton maybe there were moments when he wasn’t as clinical but that could be just because of the fatigue he feels. He’s another one that is pushing through. He is not making excuses, he’s taking on that responsibility. I thought he was very good last night.”
Postecoglou laughs off Son’s celebration question
Another talking point from the clash against Hoffenheim was Heung-min Son‘s celebration after he netted his brace.
The South Korean has come in for a lot of criticism this season and he reacted by putting his finger on his lips, seemingly signalling to his detractors to keep quiet.
When asked what he thought of his captain’s celebration, Postecoglou responded: “Mate, goal celebrations on my list of things that in my brain space right now, it’s non-existent. Non-existent, yeah.”
