Adebayor says former Spurs manager was better than Arsene Wenger

Emmanuel Adebayor rates one manager that Tottenham Hotspur sacked as the best he worked with throughout his career, even better than Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s bittersweet Tottenham stint

Adebayor’s Tottenham career was a tale of two halves, with the striker making an impressive start to life at White Hart Lane before eventually falling out of favour due to sub-standard performances and issues behind the scenes.

Harry Redknapp was undoubtedly the Spurs manager who got the best out of the striker, whose returns diminished once Andre Villas-Boas replaced the Englishman.

The centre-forward had a falling out with Mauricio Pochettino just six months into the Argentine’s rein at the club, being part of the infamous bomb squad, who were frozen out and then offloaded by the former Spurs boss.

Adebayor names the best manager he has worked with

When asked to name the best manager he has had over his career, Adebayor did name a former Spurs boss, but not one who managed him at North London.

The Togo international named Jose Mourinho as the one he liked working with the most, even though the striker only spent a brief spell on loan at Real Madrid under the Portuguese coach.

Adebayor told Optus Sport: “Best manager I’ve ever had? I would say Jose Mourinho even though it lasted only six months. He made a big impression because of the way he treated players, it was beautiful. If he loved you he would let you know whatever you are doing well he will let you know I will always choose him as the best manager.

“Wenger, he will let you do anything you want to do, obviously he is a manager who will at some point tell you what is not good and to do it this way, but that is after a while, you can make the same mistake three times and Wenger would just look at you, but Mourinho doesn’t have time, he would tell you straight, at 10:01 or 10:02 he’s already telling you, but Wenger will let you repeat and repeat it. For me, that’s the difference.”

Mourinho’s man-management style is like Marmite

The interesting thing about Mourinho is that some of the players who worked with him, particularly early in his managerial career, absolutely adore him and his man-management approach.

His direct style of communication and his tendency to challenge players is something that brings the best out of certain types of personalities.

However, other players are evidently not fans of such an approach, and it does feel like the new generation of players have very little tolerance for such a leadership style, which might be part of the reason why the 61-year-old has not had much success of late.
