Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester

0

Another weekend, another Tottenham Hotspur defeat. Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from Tottenham 1-2 Leicester City.

We want Levy Out

Those who attended the game today will know all too well how often the ‘We want Levy out’ chant was used – even when Tottenham were winning. This hostility is not going to end, and Spurs are only adding fuel to the fire with their blatant disregard for the January transfer window.

If you wanted to stick with Ange Postecoglou, why did you not back him during the worst injury crisis we have ever seen? With each passing year, window, and manager, it feels like Tottenham are increasingly protecting their bottom line over footballing ambition. Daniel Levy, good luck protecting that bottom line in the Championship.

Relegation battle on the cards?

Tottenham are now 15th in the Premier League table, but Everton in 16th have a game in hand. Spurs are seven points ahead of Leicester in 17th and just eight points ahead of the relegation zone. While this is still a sizable gap, the worrying trend is that Tottenham are not winning games but some of the teams below them are. Injured players are on the way back for the Lilywhites, but something has to change.

Is it goodbye Ange Postecoglou?

Another defeat, this time at home to 17th-place Leicester City. If you can’t win these games, I don’t see what games you are going to win. It started as a joke from rival fans, but Tottenham do very much find themselves under threat of relegation if they continue down this path. The teams below Spurs are picking up points at a faster rate, and that is dangerous.

But for me, the big question is not ‘Will Ange Postecoglou be sacked?’ – the question is ‘What next even if you do sack Ange?’ A new manager will face the same immediate injury problems – problems Spurs have ignored in the transfer window. Even after that, the same old cycle will continue. New manager arrives, signings are made, Tottenham fail to give them the funds to kick on, manager is sacked. Same old, same old.

It’s not too late but…

We still have a week left in the January transfer window. It is not too late to go and back the manager and get the club out of this mess, but I have no faith Tottenham will actually do it.

Forget the Premier League, a few signings would also offer Spurs a huge boost in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League – things the club could still actually win.

Remember, a Europa League victory would even bring with it Champions League football next season. That’s a whole lot of money, Daniel. Will he invest in success and roll the dice, I doubt it.

Mikey Moore needs to start

The most painfully alarming thing about the defeat today was Tottenham’s sheer inability to go past anyone. No one in that midfield or front line was able to pick up the ball and drive into open space. Even off the ball, Spurs struggled to make runs in behind.

Instead, it was a whole lot of 90-degree turns back the way they came, sideways passes, and often loose balls that gave Leicester a free breakaway. Time and time again, the likes of Kulusevski, Sarr, Bergvall, Son, Bentancur, and Porro turned back instead of taking their man on.

Mikey Moore was far from perfect when he came on, but at least he tried to take people on! Spurs need a spark amidst the most sparkless period of the club’s recent history.
