While Tottenham have had an injury crisis of unprecedented proportions so far this season, with the absentee list often hitting double digits, nowhere have the absences been as badly felt as in the heart of defence.

Both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have spent considerable time on the sidelines, while Ben Davies was also on the treatment table for a while until a few weeks ago.

However, Postecoglou will not have to wait long to have his first-choice centre-back pairing back as a positive update has now emerged on the Argentine and the Dutchman.

Spurs face big decision on Romero and Van de Ven

The Times have now confirmed that both Romero and Van de Ven will be ready to resume full training this week. This comes after the Argentine and Dutchman were spotted on the Hotspur Way turf.

Both central defenders are thus reportedly in line to feature against Brentford next weekend as well as the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal against Liverpool four days later.

The report says that while Postecoglou will want Romero‘s leadership and Van de Ven’s pace for the big game in Anfield, he has a ‘delicate decision to make’ regarding the pair.

The Tottenham head coach is said to be mindful of not rushing the duo back as he cannot afford to lose either player to another injury.

Postecoglou will want to avoid past mistakes

On several occasions this season, Postecoglou has rushed players back from injuries, which has ended up costing the side dearly.

Romero, Van de Ven, Odobert and Richarlison picked up fresh injuries on their first game back, which indicates that something is going terribly wrong behind the scenes at Hotspur Way.

Postecoglou cannot afford to make the same mistakes again, which is why he has been very patient with Richarlison and would have to do the same with his first-choice centre-backs.
