Tottenham overtake Aston Villa in race to sign centre-back on late loan

According to reports from Italy, Tottenham Hotspur could still get a chance to sign Fikayo Tomori before the transfer window slams shut on Monday.

Could Spurs have a busy ending to the window?

Tottenham have left most of their work until very late in the transfer window and Spurs fans will be hoping that the club are able to get some big deals over the line within the next three days.

The Lilywhites appear to be pulling out all the stops to land Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel in the final days of the window, but that might not be their only piece of late business.

It has been widely reported that Ange Postecoglou also wants a centre-back to be brought through the door before the window closes, and it has now emerged that one of Tottenham’s top defensive targets might be on the market.

Tottenham could get a late chance to sign Fikayo Tomori

Fikayo Tomori has fallen down the pecking order at the San Siro this season, with reports over recent weeks stating that Tottenham could offer him a route back to the Premier League.

SportItalia reporter Gianluigi Longari has now revealed that there could be exits from the Rossoneri in the final days of the window. He explained that the Serie A side need to raise funds to make a move for a centre-forward, naming Tomori as an option who could be sacrificed.

The journalist stated that Spurs have ‘probed’ a move for the 27-year-old through intermediaries and that may ‘come back into play’ in the next few days if the defender is put on the shop window.

Meanwhile, Gianluca Di Marzio claims Tottenham have just overtaken Aston Villa in the race to sign Tomori – not permanently but on a loan deal for the rest of the season. It is said to be a two-horse race between Spurs and Villa.

Fikayo Tomori is unlikely to greenlight Tottenham move

Presumably, the main motivation for Tomori to leave Milan would be to get regular game time elsewhere.

There is no doubt that the Englishman is a good fit for Tottenham’s system, given that he has pace to burn, is decent on the ball, and is good at defending one-v-one.

However, the Chelsea academy graduate is certainly not guaranteed to be a starter for Spurs if Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are fit, which is why he might hesitate to come to N17.

Tomori would be a much more realistic option for Tottenham in the summer if they end up losing Romero, who will have just one year left on his deal at the end of this season.
