Sources believe club-record Tottenham transfer could still happen before deadline

0

Despite having a huge offer turned down by a fellow Premier League club for a centre-back, Tottenham Hotspur have not yet given up hope of securing a late deal for the player.

Tottenham making an audacious deadline-day move for Guehi

It has been well documented that Tottenham have been long-term admirers of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi.

Despite being just 24 years of age, the Chelsea academy graduate is already vastly experienced in the Premier League and has been a regular in the England set-up over the last couple of years.

It was reported earlier today that Tottenham had launched an audacious bid of around £70m for the centre-back, but the offer was knocked back by Palace.

Spurs are still trying to secure a transfer for Marc Guehi

The Independent’s Miguel Delaney has now become the latest journalist to back up Tottenham’s late interest in the Eagles star.

Delay also confirms that the Lilywhites have seen a £70m offer knocked back by Oliver Glasner’s men for Guehi, but he claims that Spurs have not yet given up hopes of securing the defender before this evening’s transfer deadline.

The Independent reporter adds that while the deal is ‘not impossible’ for Tottenham to pull off, Ange Postecoglou’s men might have left themselves too much to do in the final hours of the window.

The Independent have claimed that sources believe a transfer could still take place before Monday’s 11pm deadline, however, those close to the player are of the opinion an exit in the summer is more likely to take place.

Are Spurs future-proofing for Cristian Romero’s departure?

A £70m move for a high calibre centre-back like Guehi cannot just be about the injury to Radu Dragusin.

Tottenham will not be paying a club-record fee for a player to sit on the bench when their first-choice centre-backs are fit.

The fact that the Lilywhites are prepared to pay so much for the Palace man is perhaps a sign that they expect Cristian Romero, who has less than 18 months left on his contract, to ask for a move at the end of the season.

This ties in with the reports we have heard over recent months suggesting that the Argentine is hesitant to commit to a new deal at N17.
