Tottenham could roll out nine-figure war chest without breaching PSR – Expert

Recent criticism of Daniel Levy’s financial management of Tottenham Hotspur has reached a fever pitch with the team desperately needing additions. However, Tottenham are well within the applied PSR rules and could spend significantly without risking potential charges.

Tottenham’s expenditure has been scrutinised in January

After a spate of recent defeats, pressure has been mounting on Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham. Spurs lost all four of their January fixtures in the Premier League, which will always naturally raise questions regarding the manager.

Fortunately, an away win and a rare clean sheet at Brentford will alleviate some of that pressure on the management heading into an all-important Carabao Cup semi-final.

In fact, with the January transfer window being open, the bigger question is why has Tottenham’s depleted squad not been bolstered more. So far, Spurs have only added a new goalkeeper and fresh centre-back in Antonin Kinsky and Kevin Danso.

The often repeated idea that it is difficult to do deals in January has, of course, risen once again. Yet it seems that Tottenham do have money to spend.

Tottenham could spend £180m without breaching PSR

Football finance expert, Stefan Borson was interviewed on talkSPORT and spoke about Tottenham Hotspurs’ finances last week.

When asked how Spurs stood from an FFP view, Borson said: “They’ve got hundreds of millions capacity, probably £180m capacity on a Profit and Sustainability Rules basis.

“They obviously had a huge sale of Harry Kane in the last accounting period so they don’t have an issue from PSR.

Stadium debt is an issue but it doesn’t count for PSR of course, which is why their bottom line numbers are not hugely profitable because they have quite considerable interests that they’re paying on the stadium debt of around £45million now.

“Don’t get me wrong, probably Daniel Levy’s greatest achievement at Spurs is the timing of the debt package that he got in place. They’re paying one to two per cent fixed interest.

“If you were to try and get that today you’d be paying five or six per cent more so it was an excellent decision to fix, but also his timing was excellent.”

Spurs fans are waiting for the rewards of Levy’s financial management

It is wonderful that Tottenham have room within PSR rules to flex their financial strength. However, that is only in theory.

Spurs have been resistant to spending any amount that affects their bottom line profits and are tied by the fact that their wage structure will rarely entice elite players to join the club.

Tottenham need players for the first team right now. They needed players to join 3 weeks ago. The financial security of the club means progressively little if the board fail to implement the finances to make necessary sporting decisions.

Maybe this will finally change next summer and Tottenham will spend uninhibitedly. However, with Spurs positioned precariously in the Premier League table and with key upcoming cup matches, they cannot afford to wait. A new forward is needed this week – and fast!
