Mauricio Pochettino contract clause could impact any prospect of future Tottenham return

A fresh update has shed light on the chances of Mauricio Pochettino completing a fairytale return to Tottenham and how that will be impacted by a clause in the Argentine’s contract with the United States national team.

Mauricio Pochettino managed Spurs between 2014-2019

No other manager in Tottenham’s recent history connected as well with the supporters as Pochettino did during his five-and-half-year spell at the North London club.

The Argentine has made no secret of his desire to return to Spurs one day, admitting previously that he has ‘unfinished business’ at the club, and his name has been mentioned by the press every single time the Tottenham job has been up for grabs since 2019.

It is no different on this occasion, with the 52-year-old being mooted as a potential replacement for the under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou, even though he only took over as the head coach of the US men’s national team less than five months ago.

Pochettino contract clause could impact chances of Spurs return

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel has reported that Pochettino is ‘very unlikely’ to return to his former stomping ground anytime soon.

The journalist says that the Argentine is ‘fully committed’ to his role in the United States and wants to take the nation into the next year’s home World Cup.

Mokbel further explains that Pochettino’s contract with the US Soccer Federation has some clauses that would ‘create major difficulties’ for Tottenham if they tried to bring him back to the club before next summer’s World Cup.

Additionally, The Daily Mail reporter also asserts that for the moment, Tottenham do not have plans to part ways with Ange Postecoglou despite the recent team’s poor run of form.

The time for a Pochettino and Tottenham reunion has passed

If Pochettino was going to ever return to Spurs, the time to do so would have been 18 months ago when he was out of work, looking to return to the Premier League, with the Tottenham job still vacant at the time.

However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided then that it would be better to look forward than backwards, first going for Arne Slot, and then pursuing Postecoglou after a move for the Dutchman failed.

With that move, one would think that the chances of Pochettino completing an emotional move to N17 are over.

The club and the Argentine himself are now in different stages of their own journey, and it is high time Spurs fans stop pining for their former manager to be the returning messiah who takes the club back to where they belong.
