Tim Sherwood urges Tottenham to spend big on £60m+ target before window closes

Tim Sherwood has said that Daniel Levy should not hesitate to break the bank for a Premier League star in the final hours of the transfer window after it emerged that the Lilywhites had a mammoth offer for the player turned down on deadline day.

Spurs fail with club-record move for England international

Tottenham are seemingly scrambling to get another centre-back through the door before the 11 pm deadline despite securing the services of Kevin Danso from Lens over the weekend.

That is possibly due to concerns over Radu Dragusin’s latest injury, with reports indicating that the expectation at Hotspur Way is that the Dragusin will be ruled out for much of what is left of the season.

It emerged earlier today that the Lilywhites had launched a sensational £70m offer for Marc Guehi, which had been turned down by Crystal Palace.

Tim Sherwood urges Spurs to do all they can to land Marc Guehi

Just a few hours ago, some sources reported that the North London club had not give up hope of securing Guehi despite seeing their offer sent by the Eagles.

Sherwood believes that the England defender is one of the few players across the Premier League who is well worth paying over the odds for.

The former Spurs interim head coach suggested that Postecoglou’s men are desperately in need of reinforcements in central defence and opined that the Palace man is a better defender than Cristian Romero.

Sherwood told Sky Sports live transfer blog: “If you’re going to try and get Marc Guehi now, you are going to pay over the odds. I think he is worth paying over the odds.

“The two best centre-backs Tottenham have at the club are Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven and unless you can go and get somebody better than them two there’s no point of bringing a body in for the sake of it because at the end of February they’re both gonna be fit and come back into the side.

“With Marc Guehi he is better than Romero in my opinion but he’s not better than Van de Ven, they are completely different but he will be one of the best centre-backs they can get.”

A move for Guehi is a sign that Cristian Romero is off in the summer

There is no way that Tottenham would be paying more than £70m for a player to sit on the bench when Romero and Micky van de Ven are fit.

Paying such a fee for Guehi is a sign that Postecoglou sees him as a starter, potentially in the near future if not immediately.

It could be further evidence that Tottenham are worried about losing Romero, with their vice-captain set to enter the final year of his contract this summer.
