Tottenham fans rate the club’s January transfer window from 1-10
The late arrival of Mathys Tel, coupled with the signings of Antonin Kinsky and Kevin Danso, has sparked debate among the Tottenham fanbase – but what would you rate the Spurs window out of 10?
Tottenham’s winter window business summary
The winter window is now behind us, and Tottenham Hotspur were among the few Premier League clubs that remained active in January.
With key areas in need of reinforcements, the club moved early, securing the services of Antonin Kinsky, a 21-year-old goalkeeper from Slavia Prague, for £12.5 million just days after the window opened.
However, the momentum stalled as the club faced difficulties in securing further signings. It took several rejections before another deal was completed, with just 48 hours left before the deadline.
On 2 February, Kevin Danso arrived from RC Lens on loan, with an obligation to buy for £26.5 million.
Then, in the final hours of deadline day, Tottenham sealed a move for Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. The highly-rated youngster joined on loan until the end of the campaign, with a £45.7 million option to buy.
While these three additions grabbed the headlines, the club also saw some outgoings, including Yang Min-Hyeok to Queens Park Rangers, Will Lankshear to West Bromwich Albion F.C., Alfie Dorrington to Aberdeen and Matthew Craig to Mansfield.
Furthermore, Spurs added several prospects to their academy, including Furnell-Gill from Liverpool, Dan Batty from Manchester City and Reiss Russell-Denny from Chelsea.
Tottenham fans rate winter transfer window out of 10
The club’s January business has sparked mixed reactions among the fanbase, with many taking to social media to express their thoughts on how the window unfolded.
For some, the signings offered promise, but for others, the timing and lack of early activity were points of concern.
One fan, COYSTTID, reflected on the long-term potential of Tel but was unimpressed with how the club’s business would affect the immediate campaign, stating: “4 but if Tel stays and becomes the next Henry 10 but in the now it does not do nearly enough to help us get by LFC or win Europa. We will likely finish bottom half of the table too.”
Others had a more positive outlook, recognising the difficulty of securing top talent in the winter window. Zach_THFC rated the window a seven, saying: “Getting players in during January is not easy, anyone expecting five signings was not being realistic.
“Wish we were more active earlier into the window. Three key positions we needed guys for and got three solid players who fit our style. Solid January transfer window realistically.”
However, timing remained a major issue for many. Mr Black gave a blunt verdict, saying: “3. But would have been a 7 if the signings came at the start of the window.”
A similar sentiment was echoed by Cahal Shannon, who rated the window a seven but admitted: “Would maybe be higher given it is January but would have liked a CB signing earlier.”
Spurs fan takes aim at Daniel Levy and Johan Lange
Meanwhile, Jimbo Wallsaw was less than impressed with the club’s approach and took aim at Tottenham’s technical director: “I am pretty certain Lange spent most of the transfer period playing Candy Crush in his office, so with that in mind we will take it.
“But the fact Levy flew to Munich to be rejected by Tel, only for him to change his mind after a phone call with Ange speaks volumes about Levy.”
Did Tottenham leave it too late?
There is validity in the concerns raised by Tottenham Hotspur fans, as the club left it late to complete their major business, raising questions about whether early signings could have made a difference in results during January.
Given that the squad was visibly stretched, it is fair to wonder how many points may have been lost due to the delayed arrivals of Danso and Tel.
However, Tottenham were also unlucky in some cases, particularly with Kolo Muani, whom they had been monitoring closely but ultimately lost to Juventus. Despite these challenges, the club still managed to bring in three players who should strengthen the squad.
On the balance of things, a 7/10 rating for the window seems fair, as Tottenham addressed key needs but did so in a manner that has left many questioning their efficiency in the market. It is now over to Ange Postecoglou and his new signings to prove that the wait was worth it.
